If you own an answering machine, set the slide switch on the TR16A Telephone Responder to the Answering Machine position; otherwise, set it to Normal. In the Normal mode, the Telephone Responder will NOT pick up the line if someone (or something) answers the phone. With the slide switch set to "Answering Machine," it always picks up the line.
