Question

When I try to "Start Server" with the XRV Server, I get the message that the server is unable to start. Looking at the log files in the XRV directory, I see that the program is trying to contact another computer (an X10 server?) over the internet. Why won't it start?

Answer

You are right in that the server it contacts is an X10 server. What it is trying to do is register your current IP and password, so that using the Installation Key (you get that once you successfully Start Server), you can connect using the Remote software. That's a feature of the software that can't be turned off.

The problem most likely resides somewhere in your Internet settings. XRV Server is not getting a clear shot at sending and receiving the information over the Internet, even if you can check email and go on-line. This can happen for a couple of reasons.

  1. You're not connected to the Internet.
  2. You are using a home network with a non-standard form of proxy or NAT.
  3. Your firewall or proxy server is not configured to allow access to the Internet for some programs, such as XRV Server.

In some cases, you may need to configure the proxy or firewall to allow XRV Server to act as a server, making the information it has (the images) available to other computers on the Internet.
