There are filmed adaptations of plays and plays that are, in essence, staged for the film camera. "Between Us," sadly, is closer to the latter.
+
Joe Hortua's four-handed melodrama about the arc of a relationship between two couples feels stagy, claustrophobic, despite filmmaker Dan Mirvish's efforts to "open the play up" with varied settings and outdoor footage. And it's performed theatrically, built to play to the back rows.
+
Grace and Carlo (Julia Stiles and Taye Diggs) are newlyweds, visiting the Midwestern home of their college buddies, Sharyl and Joel (Melissa George and David Harbour). Whatever "seems like old times" nostalgia they might share is troubled by simmering resentments, jealousies and old grudges.
+
Carlo is a photographer, 2009 All Star Seattle Mariners 51 Ichiro Blue Jerseys a struggling artist. Joel was also a photographer, but he sold-out (or turned practical) and now he and Melissa live in a McMansion. Where they aren't happy. Carlo and Grace try to endure, support.
+
But in the end, they wind up clinging to each other.
+
The other couple's unsettling bickering is just getting started when we switch to another scene, a year later. We're privy to a second meeting, this time Tigers 26 Boesch red 2010 All Star Jerseys in Grace and Carlo's dingy, crowded New York apartment. Carlo is still struggling, social worker Grace is bitter. And who shows up but Joel and Sharyl.
+
"It's great to see you guys!"
+
"Is it? After last time?"
+
"Between Us" teases out what happened at that first reunion, testy banter and debate among the foursome, who split up into pairs and condemn each other in their best "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" impression.
+
Occasionally, we flash back to bar scenes, college years much earlier in the relationship, and to a wedding.
+
"I'm not judging" means, yeah, he's judging. "You must be enjoying this" means no, no one is enjoying the direction the evening's taken.
+
There are surprise revelations and ugly memories, and the battle over the shifting class difference between these two couples plays out in an epic confrontation over a milkshake delivery tip.
+
This is a good cast, but it's all played at a rather shrill pitch that must work better on the stage. The intimacy of the screen makes it all uncomfortably in our face. And as movies often do, the play "Between Us" is deconstructed by the act of filming - showing its holes, its obvious devices and that most fatal flaw of all, characters we would run from if we encountered them at a dinner party.

Antilles School Class of 2013 28 seniors graduate from Antilles School

ST. THOMAS - Amid cheers and applause, whistles and air horns, the Antilles School 2010 All Star Jerseys Patch Class of 2013 received their high school diplomas in front of hundreds of excited family and friends during Saturday's ceremony at the Mark C. Marin Center. Adding to the celebratory air, graduate Christopher Cilliers tooted his own horn on stage - a large green toy horn, that is, which was hidden under his robe. This fun-loving, hard-working class of 28 is eager to start its journey into adulthood. "I love it here, but I'm excited to Yankees 2 Derek Jeter White 2010 All Star Jerseys finally start a new chapter in life," said valedictorian Jordan Ladd. Salutatorian Rana Daas could not believe it happened so fast. "It all comes down to this one moment," she said. "I can't wait go to college. I will miss family, but I love the idea of living alone and becoming an adult." There were ups and downs along the way, but each graduate rose to the occasion. A self-professed "math and science guy," Jordan found writing to be his biggest challenge. "I worked hard at it and I guess today is the true test," he said, laughing as he prepared to read his valedictorian speech later in the ceremony. At the podium, Jordan recalled the achievements of the Class of 2013 and looked forward to good things to come. "We have grown up to be great artists, chess champions, actors, philanthropists, national champion athletes, and most importantly, scholars. All in all, we have been meaningful contributors to our Virgin Islands community," he said. "We are in the upper level of talent here, and I know this high level of achievement will continue through the rigors of college." In her speech, Rana cited fond and amusing memories from her time at Antilles School, and credited their teachers with steering them in the right direction and making a difference in their lives. Her family, too, was a crucial part of her success. "I love you and thank you, Mom and Dad. The tassel was definitely worth the hassle," she said. Proud father Greg Ebenholtz beamed in anticipation to see his daughter, Danielle, walk by in the opening processional. "I'm overwhelmed," he said. "It's been rewarding having her here at Antilles. There are a lot of great mentors here. I wish everybody good luck in the next stage of their lives." Corinne Van Rensselaer was delighted for her son, William, and his classmates on this momentous occasion. "They are a wonderful class full of unique and brilliant individuals," she said. "I'm absolutely thrilled and very proud." Antilles School's college counselor, Chris Teare, was doubly proud. All of this year's graduates will continue on with higher education, including his daughter, Isabelle. More than 50 merit scholarships were offered to the class, totaling $2.6 million. "I'm very proud of my daughter as a father and of every graduate as their college counselor," he said. "To both the child that I love and the students I have tried to help any way I can, I congratulate you."Valedictorian: Jordan Ladd Salutatorian: Rana Daas Number of graduates: 28 Number of graduates going to college: 28 Colleges attending: Agnes Scott College; Babson College; Drexel University; Flagler College; Connecticut College; Fordham University; Georgetown University; Marine Mechanics Institute; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Massachusetts Maritime Academy; Northeastern University; Ohio Wesleyan University; Stetson University; Trinity College; Valencia College; University of Colorado at Boulder; University of Miami; University of North Carolina at Wilmington; University of Ottawa, University of South Florida Tampa; University of Southern California; The University of Tampa; University of the Virgin Islands; Worcester Polytechnic Institute; Yale University Total scholarships awarded: $2.6 million

Union First Market Bankshares and StellarOne to Merge in $445 Million Deal

Banks Union First Market Bankshares Corp. (UBSH) and StellarOne Corporation (STEL) have agreed to merge, creating the largest community bank in Virginia. Per the deal, Union First will buy StellarOne for approximately $445 million in stock, representing one of the biggest bank deals so far in 2013.

Per the agreement, each share of StellarOne will be swapped for 0.9739 shares of Union First, implying a share value of $19.50 and a deal value of $445.1 million, based on Union First鈥檚 closing price on Friday of $20.02.

StellarOne is based in Charlottesville, Virginia with branches throughout the western side of the state. The combined company will take the Union First name and be headquartered in Richmond, Virgina, Phillies 26 Chase Utley Road Cool Base Grey 2010 All Star Jerseys currently Union First鈥檚 hometown.

The combined company will have total assets of $7.1 billion, deposits of $5.8 billion and loans of $5.2 billion, according the latest financials. Combined, there will be 146 branches of the bank (fifth most in the state) in all of Virginia鈥檚 major markets.

Union First was created in 2010 through the merger Rays 3 Longoria Red 2011 All Star Jerseys of Union Bank and Trust Co. and First Market Bank.

Union First expects the merger to be accretive to earnings in 2014 and beyond. The deal is expected to be closed in January 2014, subject to all approvals. Both boards have approved the transaction.

"We are excited about the opportunity to bring our organizations together and establish the next great Virginia bank. We have long believed that the combination of Union and StellarOne would be powerful,鈥?said G. William Beale, chief executive of Union First.

Beale will retain his position as top executive of the merged company. The board of directors will grow to 19 members, comprised of 11 members for the current Union First board and 8 members from the StellarOne board with current StellarOne chairman Raymond Smoot, Jr. serving as chairman. Ronald Hicks, the current chairman of the Union First board will become vice chairman of the combined company.

The only bigger bank deals so far this year were United Bankshares Inc. (UBSI) agreeing to buy Virginia Commerce Bankcorp Inc. (VCBI) for $495 million in April and Chile-based Banco de Credito e Inversiones SA saying in January that it would spend $883 million for City National Bank of Florida from Spain-based Bankia SA.

With ultra-low interest rates and tight lending policies, community banks have been struggling to expand in recent years.

Shares of UBSH initially gapped down to around $19 with the merger news, but have recovered a portion of the losses to be trading down by about 1.5 percent at $19.75 with about one hour to go in the trading day. Shares of STEL have surged more than 16 percent to trade around $19 each.

CHICAGO- Blackhawks fail to convert early, lose 2

CHICAGO All those missed shots added up to one big blown opportunity for the Chicago Blackhawks. They couldn't bury the Boston Bruins in the early http://www.agoshow.net/Twins-7-Joe-Mauer-Red-2010-All-Star-Jerseys-37/ - Twins 7 Joe Mauer Red 2010 All Star Jerseys going and paid for it in the end. Now, home-ice advantage is gone. So is their lead over the Bruins in the Stanley Cup finals. Daniel Paille fired a shot past Corey Crawford's glove to give the Bruins a 2-1 overtime victory on Saturday night and tie the series at 1-1 with Game 3 coming up Monday 26 C.Utley blue 2010 All Star Jerseys night in Boston. "You've got to kind of swallow this one and move on," said Patrick Sharp, who scored his ninth goal of the postseason. "We know what's on the line in this series and going into Boston's going to be tough, but we're ready for the challenge. We'll find a way to be better for Game 3." The Blackhawks squeezed out a 4-3 triple-overtime thriller in Game 1 but couldn't pull this one out, with their stars once again invisible, much like their power play. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane were quiet again, just as they were in the opener, and the Blackhawks couldn't take advantage when they had the advantage. They were 0 for 3 on the power play for the second straight game and are now 7 for 57 in the postseason. As if that's not enough, here's 13 Alex Rodriguez red 2010 All Star Jerseys some more bad news for the Blackhawks. Teams winning Game 2 of the finals have gone on to win the Stanley Cup in 55 of 73 years (75.3 percent of the time) since the best-of-7 format started in 1939. The Blackhawks can't blame Crawford for this one, though. He was just fine in net, stopping 26 shots, after coming through with a terrific performance in Game 1. The problem was the Blackhawks couldn't convert and, looking tired late in the game, made a series of blunders, including a turnover that led to http://www.agoshow.net/Yankees-52-CC-Sabathia-Red-2010-All-Star-Jerseys-52/ - Yankees 52 CC Sabathia Red 2010 All Star Jerseys Paille's winning goal. They outshot Boston 35-28 for the game and really came out firing in the early going, blistering the Bruins 19-4 in the first period, but all they had to show for it was Sharp's goal. Just over a minute after he scored, Jonathan Toews' wraparound was stopped by Rask. Hossa appeared to poke the rebound in, but the whistle had sounded before the puck crossed the goal line with the goalie covering it. Otherwise, Rask was simply outstanding in net again, getting through that early siege and finishing with 33 saves. "It does get frustrating," Chicago's Dave Bolland said. "You're getting pucks at the net. Things aren't going in. You do get a sense of frustration. That frustration, you have to leave it alone and you've got to keep throwing it at the net. You hit a hot goalie, you hit a hot goalie." The Blackhawks sure have hit their share of late but simply kept rolling along. They had won eight of nine after falling behind 3-1 to Detroit in the Western Conference semifinals, taking out Jonathan Quick and the defending champion Los Angeles Kings in five games before winning that epic opener in this series. They simply ran out of steam in this one. "We just didn't continue playing the way we were playing," Toews said. "We let them have the puck a little bit too often. And you, know, we didn't hang on to it. We didn't move our feet with the puck. We were too easy to check." He thought the whistle was "a little too quick" on that wraparound. Hossa said he didn't hear it blow and thought he had a goal. "I just tried to battle for the space, and all of a sudden, I saw the loose puck," he said. "I tried to put my stick at the puck. I just felt the puck was crossing the line, and the refs ... decided no goal." Instead of having a solid lead in the game, they were clinging to a narrow margin. And now, instead of having a big lead in the series, they are knotted up and packing for Boston. It would help if their top stars converted on offense. Sharp and Hossa each have 15 points. So does Kane, but four of his six goals came in the final two games against Los Angeles. Toews, meanwhile, has found the back of the net just once. "We know what we're getting ourselves into heading to Boston and how well they play in their building, but it's not going to change our mindset at all," Sharp said. "We're going to play our best game, we're going to have to. There a good team over there, so I don't think anyone's expecting anything different."

Dallas Cowboys 2013 Schedule Analysis

Jason Garrett and Tony Romo both enter what is a pivotal year for them and the Cowboys. A trip to the playoffs is a must and since scheduling plays a huge role in the outcome of every season, Athlon is analyzing every team's 16-game slate.

Out of the Gate: Despite the brutal opening weekend rivalry game with the Giants, Dallas has a very manageable first month of the 2013 season. Kansas City, St. Louis and San Diego all missed the playoffs a year ago and all are picked to be at home this postseason as well. All could be improved this fall, so this month isn't a gimme but the Cowboys could easily be 3-1 heading into October.
Toughest Stretch: The final month of the season will be tough for the Boys. Week 12 to Week 16 鈥?despite a game with lowly Oakland at home 鈥?features four huge games with NFC rivals. Nasty road trips to face the Giants, Bears and Redskins sandwiched around a home game with Green Bay serve as massive speed bumps during the most critical stretch of the season. The only good news is Dallas will get an off weekend Yankees 42 Mariano Rivera red 2010 All Star Jerseys before heading into this five-week stretch.

SINGAPORE- Singapore fumes after pollution hits 16

SINGAPORE Singaporeans rolled back military training, kept cough-stricken children indoors and considered wearing protective masks to work Tuesday after a smoky haze triggered by forest fires in neighboring Indonesia caused air pollution to briefly hit its worst level in nearly 16 years. The Pollutant Standards Index, Singapore's main measure to determine air quality, crept into the "unhealthy" classification Monday as smoke from roaring blazes on Indonesia's Sumatra island drifted across the sea and cast a gray pall over the city-state's skyscrapers. The index reached a reading of 155 Monday night, the highest level since late 1997, when officials reported a 226 reading. On Tuesday, the reading mostly hovered between 104 and 123, still within the "unhealthy" range of between 101 and 200. Smoke haze is a nearly annual problem for Singapore and its northern neighbor Malaysia, often beginning in the middle of the year when farmers in Indonesia seek to clear land cheaply by starting fires. The issue sometimes strains ties between the countries, with Malaysia and Singapore urging Indonesia to do more to prevent illegal burning. Malaysia has been only Yankees 46 Andy Pettitte White 2010 All Star Jerseys lightly affected so far this year, with pollution readings in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's largest city, not breaching the unhealthy mark Tuesday. Indonesia has said part of the current problem is caused by peat blazes that firefighters are struggling to put out during hot, dry weather. Indonesian Forest Ministry spokesman Sumarto Suharno said the government is continuing to educate farmers about alternatives to traditional slash-and-burn agriculture. "We have been able to reduce the regional haze problem significantly for years with help from local communities and will continue to undertake all efforts to prevent it from spreading," Suharno said. In Singapore, defense ministry spokesman Col. Kenneth Liow said the armed forces have "reduced physical and outdoor training accordingly" after the pollution index exceeded 100. Landscaper Hedrick Kwan blamed the haze after his two young sons started coughing as an acrid smell of 2009 All Star New York Mets 5 David Wright Red Jerseys burning filled the air. "When they woke up today, it was worse," he said. "We usually leave the windows open but now we can't do that because of all the dust and smoke." The National Environment Agency has advised Singaporeans, especially the elderly, young children and people with respiratory problems, to avoid prolonged exposure outdoors. Melissa Cheah, a financial sector worker, said her office has discussed the possibility of advising employees to wear protective face masks. Singapore's Environment Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said his agency is offering assistance to Indonesia to put out the forest fires. Hospitals and clinics are bracing for more patients in the week ahead. "Based on what we have seen over the years, when the haze hits us, it takes about three to four days before we see all these additional patients coming in for medication," said family physician Sarani Ng Omar, who expected a rise in asthma-related cases, nasal problems and eye inflammation.

Associated Press writer Niniek Karmini in Jakarta, Indonesia, contributed to this report.

AKRON, Ohio- Therapist offers music to patients

AKRON, Ohio For Chris Blackwell, the arrival of one special therapist during his four-hour dialysis sessions is truly music to his ears.

When Akron Children's Hospital music therapist Sarah Tobias visits him every week or two, the constant whooshing sounds of the dialysis machine are replaced with the strumming of her guitar and the soothing blending of their voices.
On a recent morning, Blackwell smiled and tapped his feet in the dialysis chair as he sang along with Tobias to the catchy song, "Somebody That I Used to Know."
"All my life, I liked to use music as a way to release," said Blackwell, 19, of Canton, Ohio. "It's depressing being in this chair so long at my age."
Music therapy is one of several supportive services Akron Children's provides for free to patients, families and 2009 All Star Seattle Mariners 51 Ichiro Blue Jerseys staffs through its Emily Cooper Welty Expressive Therapy Center.
Along with Tobias, the center employs a full-time art therapist and contracts with area poets and experts in theater, dance, pottery, jewelry-making and other genres to provide a variety of experiences.
Since the center opened in May 2011, the program has offered services to thousands of patients.
"It's music and it's art, but it's really any sort of creative therapy that would be helpful to any particular child," said Dr. Sarah Friebert, medical director of the hospital's Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center. "Different kids respond to different types of therapy."
Hospitals typically can't bill insurance companies for these and similar support services, she said. Akron Children's seeks donations and grant support to fund the $240,000 annual budget for expressive therapies.
"We rely on philanthropy and kind-hearted people," Friebert said.
More research is needed to support "the mounting evidence to show these types of therapies are very helpful treatments to complement mainstream health care," she said.
Music therapy, for example, can be used to manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings, enhance memory, improve communication and help with physical rehabilitation, according to the American Music Therapy Association.
"It's just not recognized yet by insurance companies that this is a valuable piece of the holistic healing puzzle," Friebert said. "We all know that when you are engaged in something creatively, you are using different parts of your brain. It also touches your soul and your spirit."
Tobias, who has degrees in psychology and music therapy, joined Akron Children's about a year ago as the hospital's full-time music therapist.
"I get to be a counselor, but I also get to be a musician and use the music to facilitate the counseling session," she said.
Some patients need to "get it all out" by banging on a drum, she said. Others improve their range of motion to help with their occupational or physical therapy by playing a small harp.
In Blackwell's case, Tobias started working with him in the dialysis unit about six months ago after he asked whether the hospital had anyone to help him learn to play the guitar.
The instrument was a gift from the family of a former fellow patient whose father played guitar while Blackwell sang along to pass the time when they had treatments each week. Since then, the patient has received a transplanted kidney and no longer needs dialysis.
Blackwell must undergo dialysis at the hospital three times a week until he gets a kidney transplant. His jam sessions with Tobias often draw the attention of fellow patients and staff members who stop in the doorway outside his room to listen.
"You should go on American Idol," Carolyn Kovatch, a medical assistant in the unit, said after listening to them on a recent morning.
Blackwell responded with an appreciative laugh and a wide, infectious grin that lit up his face.
"I'm Mets 5 David Wright Road Cool Base Grey 2010 All Star Jerseys thinking about it - after my transplant," he said.
After singing one song with Blackwell, Tobias read the lyrics line by line as they talked about the meanings.
"Just praying to a God that I don't believe in," she said. "Tell me about that line."
"We all get to a point in our lives when we fall to our knees and just pray," he said.
"Desperation," she said, nodding. "I haven't thought of it that way."
The line opened up a discussion about Blackwell's faith and how he has been coping with his serious illness.
"It's a safe way to talk about what they're feeling," Tobias said after their session.
When his medical problems are behind him, Blackwell wants to draw on his experiences and love of music to become a worship leader.
"I love being an inspiration to others," he said. "It energizes me."

The Frugal Traveler- Amelia Island offers affordable romance

Popular for destination weddings, Amelia Island is also a perfect Florida getaway for couples in search of affordable romance. These inside tips will help you make the most of your travel dollars when you visit.

Activities: One of Amelia Island's biggest draws is the 50-block national historic district located in the town of Fernandina Beach. If you're looking for a free way to fill an afternoon, a self-guided walking tour is just the ticket. Detailed brochures featuring a numbered street map, building index, and structure descriptions with photographs are available at the tourist office on Center Street. The area also boasts a number of fun shops, boutiques and galleries for shoppers in search of souvenirs.
If you are looking to spend some time on the water, Amelia River Cruises offers several affordable daily trips for tourists. Per person rates start at $22 and go as high as $28, making it a splurge most folks can easily fit into the travel budget. Popular tour activities include cruising by nearby Cumberland Island National Seashore to see the wild horses, and sunset cocktails enjoyed to the music of local entertainers.
For affordable access to nature, head to Fort Clinch State Park. An easy drive from historic downtown Fernandina Beach, it boasts gateway access to the Great Florida Birding Trail, multiple beach spots for shelling and a fishing pier. There's also a leisurely canopied biking trail as well as a more challenging off-road course. Access to the park is $6 per vehicle, with camping site fees ringing in at an affordable $26 each. An inexpensive activity add-on at the park is touring historic Fort Clinch itself. The extra fee is only $2, with costumed reenactments being performed during the first weekend of every month.
Accommodations: Those preferring comfort over camping have a number of options available. Of note is Hoyt House. Part of Select Registry's distinguished North American inns, this luxury venue offers a posh place to rest your head at a price point most travelers can afford. Located in the historic district, the inn has an on-site cocktail lounge, outdoor garden with heated pool and hot tub, and multiple cozy common areas. Gourmet made-to-order breakfasts are served in the dining area daily, complete with linens, silver and custom-brewed coffee. Rack rates start at $239.
Further away from it all, Elizabeth Pointe Lodge has relaxed waterfront Blank Red 2011 All Star Jerseys accommodations just steps from the sand. Their starting rates are comparable at $235 per night, and include a daily buffet breakfast, afternoon cookies and a nightly wine and snack offering.
Appetites: Relaxed bar grub for the blue jean crowd is available at Slider's Seaside Grill. Fun snacks include breaded mushrooms, beer-battered onion rings and house hush puppies. All are available for less than $8. Couples searching for a sexy dinner splurge will want to head to Espana Restaurant and Tapas, where small plates of everything from spicy coconut shrimp and Spanish tortillas to grilled mushrooms and fried polenta are available in a soothing atmosphere. Vegetarian options are abundant, and tapas prices range from $6 to $13.
Looking for something more relaxed? Head to Cafe Karibo for a fun vibe, veg-friendly fare and an on-site brewery. Meatless menu items ranging from $8 to $11 include Greek quesadillas, quarter-pound homemade veggie burgers, hummus wraps and loaded portobello sandwiches on ciabatta bread. A superior hidden value lies in their side salad option. Diners can order any selection from the main salad menu as a side dish for the reduced price of $4.49. While most use this to round out a sandwich order, several of Karibo's side salads can hold their own as a full meal. My favorite is the spicy Thai noodle and veggie salad with peanut sauce, but the couscous and loaded lentils are worthy as well.

'Between Us' shows its stage origins far too clearly

There are filmed adaptations of plays and plays that are, in essence, staged for the film camera. "Between Us," sadly, is closer to the latter.

But in the end, they wind up clinging to each other.
"It's great to see you guys!"
"Is it? After last time?"
"Between Us" teases out what happened at that first reunion, testy banter and debate among the foursome, who split up into pairs and condemn each other in their best "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" impression.
Occasionally, we flash back to bar scenes, college years much earlier in the relationship, and to a wedding.
"I'm not judging" means, yeah, he's judging. "You must be enjoying this" means no, no one is enjoying the direction the evening's taken.
There are surprise revelations and ugly memories, and the battle over the shifting class difference between these two couples plays out in an epic confrontation over a milkshake delivery tip.
