Her family, too, was a crucial part of her success. "I love you and thank you, Mom and Dad. The tassel was definitely worth the hassle," she said. Proud father Greg Ebenholtz beamed in anticipation to see his daughter, Danielle, walk by in the opening processional. "I'm overwhelmed," he said. "It's been rewarding having her here at Antilles. There are a lot of great mentors here. I wish everybody good luck in the next stage of their lives." Union First Market Bankshares and StellarOne to Merge in $445 Million Deal

Banks Union First Market Bankshares Corp. (UBSH) and StellarOne Corporation (STEL) have agreed to merge, creating the largest community bank in Virginia. Per the deal, Union First will buy StellarOne for approximately $445 million in stock, representing one of the biggest bank deals so far in 2013.

Per the agreement, each share of StellarOne will be swapped for 0.9739 shares of Union First, implying a share value of $19.50 and a deal value of $445.1 million, based on Union First鈥檚 closing price on Friday of $20.02.

StellarOne is based in Charlottesville, Virginia with branches throughout the western side of the state. Beale will retain his position as top executive of the merged company. The board of directors will grow to 19 members, comprised of 11 members for the current Union First board and 8 members from the StellarOne board with current StellarOne chairman Raymond Smoot, Jr. serving as chairman. Ronald Hicks, the current chairman of the Union First board will become vice chairman of the combined company.

The only bigger bank deals so far this year were United Bankshares Inc. (UBSI) agreeing to buy Virginia Commerce Bankcorp Inc. (VCBI) for $495 million in April and Chile-based Banco de Credito e Inversiones SA saying in January that it would spend $883 million for City National Bank of Florida from Spain-based Bankia SA.

With ultra-low interest rates and tight lending policies, community banks have been struggling to expand in recent years.

Shares of UBSH initially gapped down to around $19 with the merger news, but have recovered a portion of the losses to be trading down by about 1.5 percent at $19.75 with about one hour to go in the trading day. Shares of STEL have surged more than 16 percent to trade around $19 each.

AKRON, Ohio- Therapist offers music to patients

AKRON, Ohio For Chris Blackwell, the arrival of one special therapist during his four-hour dialysis sessions is truly music to his ears.

When Akron Children's Hospital music therapist Sarah Tobias visits him every week or two, the constant whooshing sounds of the dialysis machine are replaced with the strumming of her guitar and the soothing blending of their voices.
On a recent morning, Blackwell smiled and tapped his feet in the dialysis chair as he sang along with Tobias to the catchy song, "Somebody That I Used to Know."
"All my life, I liked to use music as a way to release," said Blackwell, 19, of Canton, Ohio. "It's depressing being in this chair so long at my age."
Music therapy is one of several supportive services Akron Children's provides for free to patients, families and [url=http://www.agoshow.net/2009-All-Star-Seattle-Mariners-51-Ichiro-Blue-Jerseys-5/]2009 All Star Seattle Mariners 51 Ichiro Blue Jerseys[/url] staffs through its Emily Cooper Welty Expressive Therapy Center.

"It's music and it's art, but it's really any sort of creative therapy that would be helpful to any particular child," said Dr. Sarah Friebert, medical director of the hospital's Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center. "Different kids respond to different types of therapy."
Hospitals typically can't bill insurance companies for these and similar support services, she said. Akron Children's seeks donations and grant support to fund the $240,000 annual budget for expressive therapies.
"We rely on philanthropy and kind-hearted people," Friebert said.
More research is needed to support "the mounting evidence to show these types of therapies are very helpful treatments to complement mainstream health care," she said.
Music therapy, for example, can be used to manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings, enhance memory, improve communication and help with physical rehabilitation, according to the American Music Therapy Association.
"It's just not recognized yet by insurance companies that this is a valuable piece of the holistic healing puzzle," Friebert said. "We all know that when you are engaged in something creatively, you are using different parts of your brain. It also touches your soul and your spirit."
Tobias, who has degrees in psychology and music therapy, joined Akron Children's about a year ago as the hospital's full-time music therapist.
"I get to be a counselor, but I also get to be a musician and use the music to facilitate the counseling session," she said.
Some patients need to "get it all out" by banging on a drum, she said. Others improve their range of motion to help with their occupational or physical therapy by playing a small harp.
In Blackwell's case, Tobias started working with him in the dialysis unit about six months ago after he asked whether the hospital had anyone to help him learn to play the guitar.
The instrument was a gift from the family of a former fellow patient whose father played guitar while Blackwell sang along to pass the time when they had treatments each week. Since then, the patient has received a transplanted kidney and no longer needs dialysis.
Blackwell must undergo dialysis at the hospital three times a week until he gets a kidney transplant. His jam sessions with Tobias often draw the attention of fellow patients and staff members who stop in the doorway outside his room to listen.
"You should go on American Idol," Carolyn Kovatch, a medical assistant in the unit, said after listening to them on a recent morning.
Blackwell responded with an appreciative laugh and a wide, infectious grin that lit up his face.

When his medical problems are behind him, Blackwell wants to draw on his experiences and love of music to become a worship leader.
"I love being an inspiration to others," he said. "It energizes me."

'Between Us' shows its stage origins far too clearly

There are filmed adaptations of plays and plays that are, in essence, staged for the film camera. "Between Us," sadly, is closer to the latter.

Joe Hortua's four-handed melodrama about the arc of a relationship between two couples feels stagy, claustrophobic, despite filmmaker Dan Mirvish's efforts to "open the play up" with varied settings and outdoor footage. And it's performed theatrically, built to play to the back rows.
Grace and Carlo (Julia Stiles and Taye Diggs) are newlyweds, visiting the Midwestern home of their college buddies, Sharyl and Joel (Melissa George and David Harbour). Whatever "seems like old times" nostalgia they might share is troubled by simmering resentments, jealousies and old grudges.

Carlo is still struggling, social worker Grace is bitter. And who shows up but Joel and Sharyl.

"Between Us" teases out what happened at that first reunion, testy banter and debate among the foursome, who split up into pairs and condemn each other in their best "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" impression.
Occasionally, we flash back to bar scenes, college years much earlier in the relationship, and to a wedding.
"I'm not judging" means, yeah, he's judging. "You must be enjoying this" means no, no one is enjoying the direction the evening's taken.
There are surprise revelations and ugly memories, and the battle over the shifting class difference between these two couples plays out in an epic confrontation over a milkshake delivery tip.
This is a good cast, but it's all played at a rather shrill pitch that must work better on the stage. The intimacy of the screen makes it all uncomfortably in our face. And as movies often do, the play "Between Us" is deconstructed by the act of filming - showing its holes, its obvious devices and that most fatal flaw of all, characters we would run from if we encountered them at a dinner party.
